CANADIAN SHADOWS / MERSEY BEATS VS THE KINKS - arc records retrospective

THE CANADIAN SHADOWS PLAY KINKS-all day-all of the night-ARC 1964

Found on - hit parade-SHADOWS-ARC HP31-1964-canada MONO

Includes other great cover versions - this is the first LP on ARC to have the
cover of this Kinks song - and later found on Liverpool a go go , this version being a bit more 'tame' than the Liverpool a go go version. Is it me or does the singer sound Mexican? Possibly recorded in the states and sold to ARC  as some sides on ARC were a mix of USA, British and Canada 'versions' .

ARC records CANADA - 25 HAMMOND HITS- majestics-beatles-JUNGLE FEVER

25 hammond organ hits-1974-ARC-canada-OH8 FUNK

Enjoy 4 full cuts from this budget LP
packaged during the Hammond organ craze of the early 70s
in Canada.

It sounds like some Organ sessions made specifically for such an LP
and some left over tracks and / or stripped down pop hits mixed
to emphasize the Hammond player, which I think is Eric Robertson on some or
most tracks. Eric was the main Key player and composer in the
multi ethnic Canadian Funky-Soul band, The Majestics.

But my guess is as good as the next guy (who's familiar with the ARC label output)

The track 'Back off boogaloo' is a good example of why I think it was a track
reused as you can hear the bleed of other instruments they deliberately mixed out
to make this a Hammond workout.

frank zappa-we're only in it for the money-CANADA ALT UNCENSORED MIX-1968

Presenting A top 5 pop album of all time!

2nd Canadian pressing 1973 - Same mix as first pressing (1968) but thinner vinyl.
The Jacket is NOT a gatefold on the 1973 issue.

One of the most 'in tact' mixes of this album in regards to what Zappa
wanted with is original vision of the album (before Sir Paul McCartney and
studio politics affected the release)
This has the uncensored part about the Frank Zappa group being as *shitty as the Velvet Underground group...
(at the time they shared the same label Verve)

Has the full track Hot Poop

Harry you're Beast has a really cool censored edit.

And other anomalies of goodness that I can neither confirm or deny.

One thing I can't find out about this album is this question : was it mixed by someone else from
a general stereo mix guide in Canada or did Frank Zappa himself do the re-edits for what
market he was catering towards? Or were the re-edits done by some assigned engineer
in the USA?

tried to pull a fast one by not crediting the fabulous African musicians on this album

a feeling Mclaren got the lions share of the goods and rights)

McLaren did hit an important vibe with this album to reflect the growing New York
Hip Hop Scene by importing snippets from the World's Famous Supreme Team Radio Show
and from what I can tell, featuring probably the earliest sampling technique used in Rap.
(utilizing the studio crew that was to become the Art of Noise and all their newfangled technology)

The Great Gene Pitney Lyric Blunder - She's A Rebel

I noticed online all the Lyrics to "She's a rebel" have some parts
that read [Incomprehensible]. I looked at 30 some lyric sites..they are all the same error.

Watching this video -
- ----

I was able to fill in what he says.

Corrected lyrics -

See the way she walks down the street
See the way she shuffles her feet
How she holds her head up high
When she goes walking by, I could die
When she holds my hand out so proud
Though she's not just one of the crowd
[Incomprehensible]   --- ** MY BABY'S  always the one
Trying the things they've never done
Just because all that they say, hey
She's a rebel and she'll never be any good
She's a rebel 'cause she never ever does what she should
Well, just because she doesn't do what everybody else does
And that's the reason why I can give up all my love
She is always good to me
[Incomprehensible]   --- ** Good to her I try to be
Well, she's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, to me
And I'll be going my crooked way
They won't like me after the day
I'll just stand there, right by her side
And they say
She's a rebel and she'll never be any good
She's a rebel 'cause she never ever does what she should
Well, just because she doesn't do what everybody else does
And that's the reason why we can't share our love
She is always good to me
[Incomprehensible]   --- ** Good to her I try to be
Well, she's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, to me
Oh, she's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no
Well, she's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no
She's not a rebel, no, no, no, no, no

Here's the Crystals version -

See the way he walks down the street
Watch the way he shuffles his feet
My, he holds his head up high
When he goes walking by, he's my guy
When he holds my hand, I'm so proud
'Cause he's not just one of the crowd
My baby's always the one to try the things they've never done
And just because of that, they say
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel 'cause he never ever does what he should
But just because he doesn't do what everybody else does
That's no reason why I can't give him all my love
He's always good to me, always treats me tenderly
'Cause he's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no
He's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no, to me
If they don't like him that way
They won't like me after today
I'll be standing right by his side when they say
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel 'cause he never ever does what he should
Just because he doesn't do what everybody else does
That's no reason why we can't share a love
He's always good to me, good to him, I try to be
'Cause he's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no
He's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no, to me
Oh, he's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no
He's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no
He's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no
He's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no
He's not a rebel, oh, no, no, no

Little Richard-I don't know what you've got but it's got me-VEE JAY-vj698-mono-usa-Jimi Hendrix-don convay-1965

From original USA MONO 45rpm single

Really , REALLY great smooth soul with Little Richard shining bright with his vocals
on this one not to mention a young Jimi Hendrix playing butter guitar licks with ease.

Available in Stereo but this is from the 45 so it's solid Mono in 2 parts as it's split up
side A and B.

My only GRIPE - it's TOO SHORT!!!

Haircuts-impossibles-Call it soul STEREO
USA-SOMERSET-SF33400

One of my favorite Jerry Cole related Exploitation albums
as legend has it Alshire released
a bunch of Jerry's sessions without his knowledge
that were derived from the ID inner sounds sessions and other projects.

I enjoy this one because it has the stripped down raw
versions that were later tweaked on the Animated Egg and
Astro Sounds albums and some funky stuff like a great cover of
Skip and Flip's Cherry Pie and a Beatles cover from the White Album.
A great mix of vocals and instrumentals and combo sounds with acid
guitar, solid drums and Hammond organ vibes.

cartridge demos- AUDIO TECHNICA VS at11e • at12sa • at150mlx

Needle drop comparisons with 3 Cartridges and 3 Records

One Eliptical stylus, one Shibata, and one Micro Linear.
All Audio Technica brand .

tracks used -
1- Toccata - EKSEPTION TRINITY
2- Black Satin - DJ KRUSH - Miles Davis RMX
3- Like a Rolling Stone - HUGO MONTENEGRO

The AT11e looks exactly like a AT12sa stylus (said it was when I ordered it) but it turned out to be some odd Eliptical stylus that looks like AT11 (green stylus) under the loup
so I mounted it on my AT11 cartridge and it sounds fine.

The AT554sa is a hybrid AT12sa  (shibata)

technical - captured @24/64  - of course much data lost once uploaded to Youtube
as it converts high bit rate audio to AAC stream.

THE HUMAN RECORD WASHING MACHINE-cleaning-vinyl LP -DIY under $20

THE HUMAN RECORD CLEANING MACHINE

ethically and logically cleaning-vinyl LP

DIY under $20

watch the how-to instructional video below

This is a favoured method of cleaning vinyl,
Even when I have access to a cleaning machine!

BONUS IS IT IS NOT NOISY AND REQUIRES NO POWER

Light on the budget, easy to set up, easy to put away
easy to clean and this method is FASTER than
a machine once you get used to it.

COST OF MATERIALS -

brush - $2.00-$5.00
dr.bronners soap - $5.00-10.00
chamois - $2.00
good paper towels -$2.00
cotton towels-$5.00

Soap is eco-friendly, is anti-bacterial and is anti-fungal on top of
SUPERIOR GREASE GRIME DEEP REMOVAL.

Soap washes off EASILY with grime at temperature above 78degrees.

My method outlined includes simple materials

CLEANING SOLUTION NFO -

See bottle in video.
See container / spray method.
If you have a spray bottle that holds around a 750ml - 1000ml (1 litre)
all you need is 1 capful of Bronners soap. You can add 1/4 extra cap if
you feel you want super suds.

1 Capful Dr.Bronner's soap
( I recommend peppermint or unscented)

Fill the rest of the bottle with your water you choose.

The BRUSH -
it's a white wash brush - made for painting .
It has the important tapered off ends that go ULTRAFINE
and very very soft.
It's excellent for painting on the soap into the grooves.
Paint in manner you feel comfy but go in direction of
grooves for best effect.
The greasier the record (hand prints from DJing, edge marks ect)
the more time you might have to spend.
The best thing about this method is you get very good at
judging how much you need for each record and the control
factor is great.

YOU SPRAY A COUPLE DUSTINGS OF SOAP ON EACH SIDE OF THE LP.

WET THE BRUSH UNDER THE WATER BEFORE YOU
BEGIN - tap the brush of excess water in sink. (don't want it dripping, just
wettened)

LABELS - BE CAREFUL!

IN MANY CASES MOST LABELS ARE WATER PROOF TO A POINT!
you won't have to worry about many labels getting bubbled or damaged
but this is something you have to LEARN about.
Some lables, the color bleeds, the label will warp , it will bubble
many things can happen when water is applied. If you do not know
take care to first Spray the soap on the BRUSH FIRST and then
apply it to the vinyl taking care not to go onto the label.

CLEAN RECORD ON LEVEL SURFACE!!!

IN the video you can see I elevate the record on what is a Drum practice
pad that is circular. It has rubber edges and I can flip the record and keep the soap
on.
Alternative method is just to do it on another clean towel or similar.

WATER FOR RINSING NFO -

In my case after evaluating the water supply I can use the tap water
for the rinse.

NOT EVERYONE CAN USE TAP WATER !!!

I tested water PH and it's just slightly acidic , PH around 7 - 7.5 is optimum.

Tested for heavy minerals and metals.
(simple test is let water evaporate on mirror or glass)
See if there is residuals.

IF THERE IS FLOURIDE OR CHLORINE OR METALS YOU MUST
PROCESS YOUR OWN WATER FOR RINSING.

Lots of info online to process water if you need to
(de-ionized, PH balance, distilled)

DRYING-

Using 2 Large SYNTHETIC Chamois - MICROFIBRE non streak towels.
(the yellow towels)

These are a rubber like feel that SOAK UP WATER
easily and do not cause streaks or residue.
These are available at any dollar store for a dollar each.
(You must wash these thoroughly before you use them for
drying records)
Since they dry out after use very fast, you must also wet them with
warm water, squeeze as much water out before use so they
are flexible and will soak up drippings.

Work with Chamois on top of flat surface with other towels
already laid down.

Once Chamois are used then do a wipe down with absorbent
cloths such as cotton or low-lint, non abrasive paper towel.

TAKE CARE THE WHOLE TIME TO GRAB VINYL WITH
PAPER TOWEL OR CHAMOIS PIECE (you can cut up one
to make a few smaller ones)
YOU DON'T WANT TO GREASE UP YOUR CLEAN
RECORD!

Place vinyl in drying rack of your choice.

If album cover is dirty take to a different area and clean / repair.

NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A NICE CLEAN
INNER SLEEVE
FOR YOUR NEWLY CLEANED VINYL.

ALCOHOL - useful but limit the use -

** alcohol is good for spot removing some things but must be careful
and very controlled.
***a dilution of 1 part isopropol or pure grain alcohol to 30 parts water
is good for light spray on carbon fibre brush or nice cotton brush or
wipe for clearing your vinyl of any dust when it's on your turntable platter.
NEVER SPRAY IT DIRECTLY ON THE VINYL SURFACE.

I'm not here to preach but any recipe that uses automotive products such
as anything containing Glycol, is highly suggested to RUN AWAY FROM.

A killer sprawling acid funk workout that is LIVE
and to top it off with 2 duelling drummers
This is like what could be thee collective

adding a thick texture and polyrhythms from mars.
Recorded as clearly indicated in Montreal Canada.
Very good sound on this Live engineered LP. No annoying crowd overdubs.

BAD WOMEN ARE KILLING ME - mckenna mendelson mainline- MIMSY BLUES VIDEO MIX

BAD WOMEN ARE KILLING ME - mckenna mendelson mainline -
MIMSY BLUES VIDEO MIX
I mixed in the video clip of Mimsy Farmer doing a freestyle dance from a freakout film - goes very well with the sexy-ruff and ready Electric Blues

1968 - recorded in Toronto by Jack Boswell
features Denny Gerrard on Bass (from Paupers)
Mike McKenna fresh from Luke and the Apostles

heavy ass electric blues - dig the vibe
(( watch and listen )) ________________________________________ ****

Mainline playing at Nathan Phillips Square (mid-late 60s) in Toronto.  Tony Nolasco on drums, (the late) Frank "Zeke" Sheppard on bass and Joe Mendelson on the far right playing guitar. (Mike McKenna  playing a Gibson SG single on far Left - PAF - pickup early 60s vintage)

Denny Gerrard from the Paupers plays on this cut
and others from the album you see below. His
presence is enormous !!

~freQazoidiac came from beyond the 33rd dimension!

The cosmic tide had opened for the time to enable
the song structures of the collected past to be
placed into this chosen virtual dimension for a current
but unknown period of existance.
